Homework: Students will not have homework on a regular basis-however, they are expected to read over their notes regularly and study for every announced test and quiz.
Classwork: Students will work both independently and in groups during class. Students are expected to work when given the opportunity to complete assignments. Therefore, students must make sure that they participate in class and attempt all work.
Quizzes: Students will be given frequent quizzes in order to assess their knowledge of the content taught. Quizzes will be paper and pencil quizzes as well as online assessments.
Tests: We will have cumulative tests at the end of each unit. These tests will be comparable to end of grade test questions to help students familiarize themselves with the language and the way that those questions are delivered to the students. These assessments will also be a combination of paper and pencil and online. STUDENTS WILL HAVE AN END OF GRADE SCIENCE EOG WHICH WILL COUNT AS 20% OF THEIR YEAR AVERAGE.
Projects: Students will be assigned at least two projects throughout the year. These projects will be assigned and described in advance to provide plenty of time for students to complete these projects. Students will be given some time in class to complete these assignments, but please keep in mind that they will NOT have enough time to complete the entire project in class. Some of the work must be completed at home.
Grading Policy:
Summative Assessments: 70% of grade (Unit tests, projects, and presentations) Formative Assessments: 30% of grade (quizzes, classwork, homework, etc)
Grades are earned based on mastery of concepts. Missing assignments are due within 1 week of the due date in order to earn credit. Summative assignments may be made up after school once the student has completed the Request to Retest form and 3 activities demonstrating remediation. Parents are required to sign these forms giving permission to stay after school.
Absences: When a student is absent, he or she is responsible for the material that he/she missed. Students will need to copy down notes and complete the missing work. It is the STUDENT’S responsibility to get their make-up work and turn it in the next day unless there are extenuating circumstances such as a death in the family or extreme illness. Please see me for further assistance.
Tutoring & Re-testing: I will be available for tutoring/test re-takes on Tuesday afternoons from 3:30-4:30. If students plan on staying, they must have a note that morning in order to stay. All students must have transportation home and be picked up at 4:30. If students are picked up late more than once they will no longer be allowed to stay after school for tutoring. IT IS THE STUDENT'S RESPONSIBILITY TO REQUEST TO RETEST. The retest must be given within TWO WEEKS of the initial test.
I am looking forward to working with you and your child this school year. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.
I understand my role as a member of this science class.
